Pictured here: I desperately need to replace our flag, but this kind of reflects how I feel these days. Ironically (or perhaps not) the Gadsen flag in the front of the property is pristine.
I don’t like how long it was before I posted “Grown-ups, Farmers and Monsters” so this is my experiment to keep my toes in the water and stay engaged. Let me know if it’s interesting or pointless trivia you could give two shits about.
Dog #3, an Alaskan husky that Husbandmouth gave me for Christmas, is at the emergency vet right now because of an as-yet uncertain injury to her front left shoulder. I didn’t identify a fracture or external wound so I’m guessing a dislocation or muscle tear, but there’s no swelling as yet- just horrible, heart-wrenching husky howls any time any weight gets put on the leg. Our livestock are especially hardy- the breeder who sold us our starters has literally never had a vet to his farm even for birthing- so it’s been a while since I went to a vet and holy shit a human cardiologist would probably be cheaper.
Our septic field apparently has all the integrity of the CDC and is just shy of overflowing. It was pumped out yesterday and almost immediately refilled with runoff water. We have to wait a goddamn month for an engineer from the township to supervise a bunch of burly guys standing around over a hole in the ground. This is likely to be grotesquely expensive and I’m pretty anxious.
Speaking of which, construction starts next month on the solar array on the south roof of the barn you can see in the background of the above picture, with the capacitor/battery going in the cellar- Mouth Farms will be able to go fully off-grid with the flip of a switch. This was also outrageously expensive but alas, the contract was signed and hefty deposit made before all of the above started reaching for our wallets.
Husbandmouth will begin his new career as a trucker in a matter of weeks with a shiny new Class A license, hazmat certification, and a bunch of other things I’m incredibly proud of. As a language/writing/public speaking instructor I’ve worked with many adults my age and older who are plotting dramatic career changes and it is, while very achievable, an act of great courage and effort. Go Husbandmouth. Good fuck do we need the money and good fuck does America need more truckers.
I very recently got to shoot an IMI Desert Eagle in .44 cal and the owner, the fellow who sponsored us into the gun club, has a cool slow-mo video I might post after cleanup. (.50 isn’t allowed on the indoor pistol range.) Same club is hosting an environmental clean-up day next month as stewards of the unowned land around them and the undeveloped parts of the property. This is just a general voice of praise for how much hunting/gun clubs tend to be very positive parts of every neighborhood I’ve been in and it can’t be a coincidence how many 2A advocates reflect strong values of volunteerism and community spirit.
The hospital system Fathermouth has been visiting for physical therapy notified him yesterday that masks were now optional in “general areas” of all their facilities, but assured him that staff will still be required to wear them at all times, because that makes sense. If masks work whatsoever, this facility either doesn’t care about the lives of their patients or their staff, depending upon the particular style of mental jiujitsu they apply to mask efficacy. So, which one is it? (Por que no los dos?)
I’m about 80/20 in favor of ‘yes’ in the “was the stupid Will Smith/Chris Rock punch/slap completely and entirely staged because Pfizer pays for like 80% of the Oscars and is rolling out the alopecia treatment the company they did a hostile takeover of last year developed?” The only meaningful question left about what is probably the most important social issue of today is “did Pfizer pay Smith and Rock the same amount and were they open negotiations when they did?” My thinking is that Rock should be paid considerably more: Smith’s brand will now go up as a man that attacked someone on stage and cursed a bunch during a “serious cultural event” to “defend his wife’s honor” and reaffirm everyone’s sneaking suspicion that we should just assault people whose words bother us. There is literally no cost here: he didn’t get charged, sued, or arrested, still got the award (which is punishment in itself) and looks like a badass. Rock looks like someone who insulted someone’s wife (which is apparently now a bad thing despite the Oscars basically being a host of color roasting everyone in sight while intermittently tossing preplanned trophies at people for at least the past 5 years) and got slapped like a little bitch without returning fire. All I can say is, I hope Pfizer ppaid well for Rock to take the pfall for the ‘Alopecia Challenge.’
Good to Subscribe: Thomas S. Harrington, ‘Words In The Pursuit of Light.’ Start with the section Essays on Politics and Culture (English). If you speak Spanish, he also has an extensive essay collection on Spanish politics, Catalan independence, etc. These will bridge you to Brownstone Institute where they’re hosted, a policy institute where you’ll likely discover at least one other great article by someone else. My current favorite is his March 22 essay “The Fact-Checking Game.”
Currently Reading: Einstein’s Fridge: How The Difference Between Hot and Cold Explains The Universe by Paul Sen. Physics and quantum theory are hobby subjects of mine but I’ve got no formal educational background on them. They’re very tough subjects to jump into if you get the wrong introduction as there’s a steep curve in understanding core concepts without, well, going to school to be a physicist. This is a really good book for people like me, as it presents complex material in a manner I like: it teaches the progression of thermodynamic theory from its 19th century origins to the present, so your learning recapitulates the actual advance of the science itself. By the time you’ve caught up to modern history, you’ve learned the fundamental principles along the way, pretty painlessly (and some cool history while you’re at it.)
Have a day!
An eclectic mix to start the morning. Thanx. Sorry 'bout Dog #3. Congrats to Husbandmouth. Did that for a few years. In the prehistoric era. When truckers were cool. (As opposed to being "a small group of racist, misogynistic dissidents"- J. Trudeau)
Safe travels to hubby. Way to make it happen at Mouthfarm.
Yes to IMI Desert Eagle vid please.
