I personally love it when people (of both sexes) wear fragrance, but fragrance is something that's VERY easy to do wrong- lots of products smell absolutely gross (to me) and many people wear too much or wear it while being smelly underneath it, and then it's fucking horrible.

I am really, really sensitive to smell of any kind; there isn't much in that world that isn't a love/hate relationship for me.

Yes, as long as I can't smell it beyond the scientifically accepted social distancing boundary.

A beautiful woman is a beautiful woman, with artificial scent or not.

Whisky, cheap tobacco and sweat.

Been a fragrance-free household for many years now and just about any artificial fragrance, whether it be dryer sheets, air fresheners or perfume, are annoying. When out in public if I can travel through the crop dusting of this sort I'm fine. The problem comes with family hugs and getting marked by people and then having to smell their 'scent' for hours or maybe even days. Natural essential oils are just fine in moderation, however. Patchouli is always nice. A woman I once met on the bus said it was her 'hippy' scent.

That picture might as well be me :/ I'm so sensory oriented that smelling fresh cut grass of certain types has been known to put me into a near orgasmic state... My ex-love once entrapped me by calling me over one night- when I arrived he'd just cut his lawn, put on a magical lilting Irish folk tune, was wearing my fave cologne that I could smell on the soft summer breeze ( so that I'd no idea where it was coming from...) . He had to call to me from his porch, shirtless( the bastard!)..because I'd stopped in the middle of his lawn...swaying...trying to triangulation the different inputs and I was enraptured.

I'm currently wearing Calvin Kliens Euphoria, tho it's not my fave.

Those are : Dolce&Gabanna the One for women, Givenchi's Organza, and my new fave,Jessica McClintocs original...which with its top note of freesia is like femininity in a bottle. * swoon*

Gosh yes. A fragrance that complements someone's natural scent can overcome a variety of other faults. That said, allow to me reveal my age, sexual preference, and generally dubious taste with two words: Drakkar Noir. 90s night at the retirement home is going to smell amazing.

It seems like most of the more-than-urbane correspondents here have not lived in Europe, especially France. Getting on the metro at 10:00 PM on a Saturday night, the smell of hundreds/thousands of people who shower once a month whether they need to or not, coupled with the mountains of various scents they put on to cover up that fact, is regularly overwhelming.

When I was young I used scents, but after living in Europe for long enough, I decided that frequent showering/modest deodorant and whatever pheromones' were left were fine with me. Still love a lady with just a touch of the "right" scent -- who also has showered before she put it on.

I bollixed the results. I intended to select "Yes" but selected the one underneath it by accident. Can you fix that?

Even though I enjoy Carlin's anti-cologne tirade, I wear Hugo Boss and, occasionally, what I think is an old bottle of Polo cologne. I remember liking English Leather. Any recommendations?

A girl I knew in HS wore so much Tabu that you could smell her before you ever saw her...gave me a migraine headache if I got too close. I’m happy you don’t wear that stuff anymore haha.

I just found four bottles of Hai Karate in a box in my closet. I suspect it was a gag gift for my Dad. Incidentally, last night i watched Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, so I hesitate to experiment with any new scents!

You don’t have “it’s according to the scent.” Twenty or so years ago my husband wore Old Spice after shave balm. I don’t think it is available now. He smelled so good, that my mom even noticed and got some for my brother. I wish I could find that stuff again so I could have a nice scent reminder of him.

Make my own based on Pinaud Vanilla aftershave (add bergamot, vetiver, grapefruit essential oils, maybe little sandalwood etc--have fun with i!) in warm seasons, pinaud bay rum plus sandalwood/oud, patchouli, etc in cooler seasons. Usually also add gin to the base to boost alcohol contentt a bit a d for the juniper element. F'real, have fun with it!

I still have the nearly full bottles of English Leather cologne and after shave I inherited from my father over thirty years ago. Does that count?

I'm also very sensitive to smell, and unless the relationship is well established I far prefer to let my nose lead the way by virtue of natural pheromone selection. That not withstanding, the proper scent applied sparingly can be quite enticing and a welcome addition to a close embrace.

I prefer the scent of actual humans, unless there is excess BO (sweat) ,hygiene problems or bad breath. Natural healthy human scent is the best! I hate when my husband takes a shower and then all I can smell on him is soap. If he's been working outside and also smells like the woods, sawdust, or exhaust, all the better. Could someone make a cologne that smells like those things?

Expand full comment

I chose au naturel, but I have to admit that ever since my husband grew his beard out, a good quality scented beard oil is extremely sexy. You get just a hint of scent walking by, and it smells better and better the closer you get!

This whole discussion makes me miss my Dad. He wore Old Spice daily for work. On the dress up times he wore various things. English Leather, Hai Karate, Drakkar Noir, there were others I can't remember off hand, and this one stuff that I never knew the name of from Guerlaine (sp?) that smelled (to Mom and I) like 7-Up. He always smelled so good. 😌

Edited to correct tge spelling of High.

I can tolerate natural extract fragrances, but all the chemical ones taste terrible. Just from smelling them, I don't have to put my mouth on them or anything

I find that excessive perfume is a turnoff for me. In a previous life (I.e. decades ago I dated a woman that wore a perfume from Clinique, when I recognize it on another woman they are always surprised.

I have to confess a real weakness for Chanel #5 but in this age I don’t even know if it is made anymore.

I have never worn cologne as I detested the boys around me that slathered it on. I haven’t worn deodorant in over a decade.

Todays fragrances leave me wanting…

I’m chemically sensitive so I can’t tolerate it. I liked Chanel #5 but they changed it & it wasn’t the same.

I love my fragrances (no, not *those* ones) and have a decent collection. Here's some of my faves :

Malefic Tattoo (from Laurent Mazzone) - a woody, 'masculine' scent with incense notes. Probably my go-to fragrance

Dualite Magnifique (from Plume Impression) - a light leather with a floral background (less aggressive and classier than Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather)

La Liturgie des Heures (from Jovoy) - a heavy incense that smells like being at an old-style Catholic mass. Didn't think I'd like this one at all, but it's my favourite incense based fragrance

Private Label (from Jovoy) - vetiver and woods, a very masculine fragrance that makes you feel like you can take on the world

Patchouli Noir (from Christian Provenzano) - a more feminine scent. Effortlessly sophisticated and classy with lower sillage (not a big 'chemtrail'). More floral than patchouli. A magical fragrance and one of my daughter's favourites. I wear it when I want a bit of a change from the woods and incense.

Fiore d'Ambra (from Profumum Roma) - a very high quality amber and opium scent. Warm and seductive - stunning.

Acqua di Sale (from Profumum Roma) - another very high quality one from this house. A 'salty' sea scent - reminds me of being at a seafront watching the fishing boats coming in. Stellar longevity on my skin.

Iron Duke (Beaufort London) - a brand created by the drummer from Prodigy who has a bit of a thing for English naval history. This fragrance smells of leather, gunpowder, metal, and smoke. Not as aggressive as Beaufort's Rake & Ruin, but similar (if you want to ensure no one sits near you on the metro then wear R&R - I love it, but it's a bit 'out there'). Iron Duke settles down to a majestic 'aged' leather scent with hints of smoke and battle.

Patchouly (from Profumum Roma) - this house concentrates on making high quality perfumes with 'pure' notes. This one is a deep and dark almost gourmand patch, very warming and chocolatey.

Beach Hut Man (from Amouage) - a fresh herby and minty fragrance. Great longevity.

Zizan (from Ormonde Jayne) - a great herby, woody fragrance with bitter hints. This one really zings and is my most 'complimented' perfume after Creed's Aventus (I got a bit bored with the Aventus after a while)

Oud Aquilaria (from Oman Luxury) - a great Arabic style scent with oud and rose.

I don't really know all the proper terms to describe fragrances - and how do you 'describe' a scent anyway? And my nose isn't all that good at picking up the individual elements. It's a bit like wine - I know what I like when I taste it, but couldn't tell you about which plum or tannin was giving rise to that aftertaste redolent of autumn harvests (in sommelier speak).

I started out long ago with Stetson, as most of us country kids did at the time. Kept it going in a rotation with a light amount of English Leather and Ralph Lauren Polo through high school and college. I wear mostly Ralph Lauren Polo Blue now, because I don't think they make English Leather or Stetson any more.

Incidentally, my favorite perfume for a woman is Lady Stetson.....takes me back to those junior high dances in the late 80's/early 90's, where I danced rigidly, at arm's length with my crush.....sigh.....

Now, I don't have a true preference for women's perfume. As long as I don't smell funk, BO, or an overpowering amount, it all smells okay to me.

Love the smells of real things. Cannot walk past rosemary or mints or French geranium without rubbing my hands on it. Woodsmoke, horses, dogs, wood shavings, orange rind, good spice smells from the kitchen...

TBH i'm kind of indiferent. I'd be a hypocrite if I requested Mrs Dubya to wear anything anyway as I never wear deodorant or aftershave (unless at a wedding). All you need is a natural based shower gel or soap that doesn't kill all the lovely natural bacteria under the pits and around the groin and you don't smell as the good bacteria takes care of it.

I didn't realise how effective it was until I ran out and went back to an old bottle of Lynx shower gel and after 6 hours I was a honking stink fest.

First perfume I ever wore was Shalimar. Wore Tabu in my early years, but woke up one morning and it made me nauseous! Then wore Estée Lauder and the same thing happened after a few years of wearing it. Then discovered a French perfume called Secret of Venus. The early stuff had ambergri & had to order it from France. . It is no longer available . Still have a bottle that has a minuscule amount in it and I sniff it once in a while. Had more than one man during my bar hopping years follow me, growl and ask me what I was wearing.

Was having dinner in Santa Fe one night and a man walked past our table and came to a dead stop. He backed up and leaned in toward my friend and then me and yelled “Secret of Venus”! He stated he hadn’t smelled that scent in maybe 20 years but it took him back to a woman he fell head over heels in love with, and who broke his heart. He said he’d go to his grave remembering that scent! Funny how scents can do that. Lilacs do that for me. If I wear anything these days, it’s Donna Karan Cashmere and just a hint of it.

I love a good after shave on men ( Brut, Polo, Aramis, Ford’s Tobacco Vanilla, yes, even Old Spice). It’s still a turn on. But I also like an honest sweat smell (not body odor which is different) like when hubby comes in from working out in the yard. Growwwwwl.

I tend to like nothing, or just a hint of something light and food based. Vanilla, maybe coconut, very subtle. Possibly neatsfoot oil would be nice, but that’s never been in the offing so maybe not. I love that smell though, having been raised in a barn tack room apparently.

But all the best smells are free. And evolutionarily sexy.

I too love ether, but any more than special occasions makes it hard to hold down steady employment. Ether, like perfume, is better in moderation.

My favorite women’s scent is called “#45 Bulletproof” and is by Margot Elena. It’s smoky and earthy and tobacco-like.

For men it’s Bulgari Black. Also a very earthy, tobacco-like scent. If I’m out of Bulletproof I wear my husbands Black.

Lavender can be tricky. I have to replace a few each year at our Neb. home. We winter in Az and here they seem to do quite well. SW Neb. winters can be really harsh on them. You might have to move them around in your yard until you find the right spot. Good luck.
