How refreshing to see Grace Jones again.

I came to her new wave stuff as a teen about a decade after it actually dropped, and she was in all my favorite movies. She was/is an incredible personal brand builder, like Lady Gaga before Lady Gaga, except she actually built on substance.

One of the greatest movies ever made is Conan the Barbarian. It's got everything except space ships. Just looking at the poster makes you stand up straighter, I swear.

And the short stories and novels and the magazine/comic books! Both the regular one and Savage Sword! Lin Carter, Roy Thomas and Sprague de Camp's great scripts and Ernie Chan's, John Buscema's and so many other great wrtiers and artists, pure distilled awesomeness!

Howard's stories about King Kull, Bran Mak Morn and Solomon Kane are great yarns as well, truly they are.

Still can't read "Beyond the Black River" without misting up, when Slasher makes his last stand.

"He was a man," said Conan. "I drink to his shade, and to the shade of the dog, who knew no fear." He quaffed part of the wine, then emptied the rest upon the floor, with a curious heathen gesture, and smashed the goblet. "The heads of ten Picts shall pay for his, and seven heads for the dog, who was a better warrior than many a man."

Rikard, you just earned SO much cred from me with that deep reference.

I had read that story around the time of the loss of our family dog and it had the same effect on me.

Why thank you!

You might find it entertaining to know that I've used quotes from Howard's stories in both debates and whn teaching. There's one where Conan in one fell sweep eviscerates the whole of post-modernism, nihilism and relativism by stating that if existence is indeed an illusion, then he too is part of the illusion and can know no difference, therefore the point and the question is moot and pointless.

It made my tutor in literary criticism and analysis sit up and clap like a little child, a very stern woman in her early seventies. She was overjoyed to be introduced to a whole genre of literature she had been completely ignorant about, thinking "pulp fiction" was all about the old hard-boiled detective novels of the interwar period. (Excuse me while I relocate my shoulder joint after all this back-patting.)

I haven’t seen Conan, the Barbarian in 40 years. Husband and I took my much younger bother, who admired greatly Conan’s dining habits. The line I will never forget is , “Do you want to live forever?” Red Sonia

It was actually Valeria, Conan's first love, who said that. :)

And who he ironically outlived.

I said it was a long time ago. I definitely remember her dying early. I guess I need to rewatch it.

I thought elephants were no longer in the circus because animals are people, too...

Nah, the circuses that have survived the dumb anti-circus wave of the early oughties that brought down Barnum and Bailey have 'em. They're well cared for and any animal performance (at least in the US) is pretty highly regulated.

Elephants are amazing

If I was told "you're only allowed to really like one thing ever" elephants would be really hard to bump off the top. It would be that or dogs, I think.

When I lived in Japan, there was this totally forgotten out-of-the-way roadside animal park. The area I lived in was basically forgotten by the flow of time in about the early 1970s or so.

Anyway, it mainly featured elephants, most of whom they had gotten by way of Sri Lanka. Some were rescues, some weren't. They played soccer and painted pictures and had shows a couple times a day where they did some circusy things, but it was mainly just walking around watching elephants in this kind of Montessori School interacting with things.

I was there at least once a month. I think they actually started getting sick of me.

Who got sick of you? The people running the place or the elephants? Somehow, I can't imagine it was the elephants.

Dogs. I mean...unconditional love and they're easier to maintain. More adaptable. Also a bonus ?-

Even a St Bernard won't crush you if they think they fit in your lap... this cannot be said of .. well...pretty much any breed elephant .

That is pretty cool, actually. RIngling Brothers Barnum and Bailey just announced that they are going to go back to touring without any animals, so I figured it was all over. Have not been to the circus since I brought my kiddos there years ago...and we all loved the elephants the most. Hooray for the circuses that kept them.

I completely agree, my intention was to offer black/navy/maybe white. That stuff is on his end, but we will discuss it today.

Love this design! Can you make hoodies? I look terrible in Ts but would purchase this design in a hoodie posthaste--I need a new one for my new job that does not require the jab.
